The Naden Band
The Naden Band has been part of naval tradition on the
West Coast since 1940. Formed during World War II, the Naden Band kept
up both civilian and military morale with concerts, dances and hundreds
of radio broadcasts, and played for base ceremonies, monthly church
parades and public parades through the streets Victoria and Vancouver.
The band also assisted the government in raising money for the war
effort through countless War Bond Drives in Western Canada.
In
the decades following World War II, the Naden Band continued to
represent the Canadian Forces throughout British Columbia and Canada,
receiving acclaim for its performances at events such as the Pacific
National Exhibition and the Grey Cup in Vancouver, the Kelowna Regatta,
Edmonton’s Klondike Days, and the Calgary Stampede. In travels abroad,
the Naden Band became an ambassador for Canada with performances as
varied as Expo ‘70 in Osaka, Japan; accompanying the Provider and the
2nd Canadian Destroyer Squadron in a 1972 tour of Fiji, New Zealand and
Australia; as well as participating in an historic visit to Vladivostok,
Russia in 1991.
In 1994, the Naden Band was one of 5 military
bands cut in the federal budget. In 1997 the Minister of Defence
announced a restructuring of the music branch and Naden Band was
reinstated and has rebuilt its reputation for musical excellence. In
2000, the band welcomed former members for a 60th anniversary reunion
that truly celebrated its rebirth and ongoing tradition.
The
Naden Band continues to aid Canadian Forces Recruiting offices in their
efforts to reach young Canadians, through concerts and presentations at
schools. The band demonstrates support for local communities with its
active role in fund-raising for non-profit organisations, such as the
Salvation Army Christmas Toy Drive, the Military Family Resource Centre
and the United Way. The ceremonial component of the band supports
government events, including the Victoria Remembrance Day Ceremonies,
Opening of the Provincial Legislature and the Canadian visit of Her
Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2003.
The band has represented the
Navy throughout Canada at events such as the Beating Retreat Ceremonies
in Ottawa, the International Military Band Festival in Quebec City and
the Memorial Cup in Kelowna, BC. In June, the band was proud to take
part in the 60th Anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France.
