Volunteers

Volunteer Sign-Up for 2010 is now closed. Check back later for information about 2011!

We need volunteers! This is a callout for all who have volunteered in the past and for all that want to volunteer for the first time! Come on out and volunteer at this year’s Golden Spike Days Festival, have some fun and meet new friends!

Why do we value our volunteers so much?

The Golden Spike Days volunteers are made up of tireless people, dedicated to making the festival a successful family event. They deal with everything from finance to entertainment, site management, event co-ordination and interactions with the generous sponsors to ensure that the public can enjoy a trouble-free and fun-filled time at the park. These enthusiastic members form a big piece of the puzzle that is the Golden Spike Days Festival. Each year hundreds of volunteers work all year to deliver a festival that the citizens of Port Moody and surrounding communities can enjoy. Without these individual's hours of dedication and hard work, the festival would not take place. From garnering sponsors, organizing events and entertainment to ensuring the event is marketed, the volunteers put in hundreds of hours throughout the year to deliver a festival that has been celebrated for 31 years.

Why should you volunteer?

Because volunteering can give you a sense of accomplishment that nothing else really can. The Golden Spike Days is the perfect event to donate some of your time to. All of our volunteers are deeply involved in the inner workings of the festival and they have so much fun helping others and learning. Festival staff and directors are always going to be there to guide you and answer your questions. To thank our volunteers for their efforts, we have installed a hospitality suite that will serve food to volunteers during their breaks. They will also receive a Golden Spike Days Volunteer T-Shirt and a letter stating the number of hours worked. All of these factors can combine to give you a great volunteering experience under the sun in July.

What are some of the positions available?

Listed below are some of the volunteer positions you can sign up for. Please keep in mind that we cannot guarantee that you will be placed in the position of your first choice as positions are distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis at the orientations. So try to attend the earliest orientation to get the best chances of working where you want!

Beverage Garden

These volunteers are required to be over 19 years of age and have some cashier experience. They will help sell beverage tickets and in the general clean up of the beverage garden area. They need to be responsible and have a great attitude.

Events

Volunteers help with assisting a variety of events. They make sure that the line ups for these events are orderly and generally lend a hand to those running the various events. Some positions include helping with arts and crafts, helping with spray tattoos and running carnival games.

Greeters

These volunteers welcome people to the park and hand out programs and promotional materials. Occasionally, they assist in helping festival goers navigate the park. Greeters need to be informed about the events taking place during the festival and willing to help those who have questions. Patience and a smile are required.

Hospitality Suite

The hospitality suite in staffed by volunteers who take care of volunteers before and after their shifts and during their breaks. The duties required of volunteers in the hospitality suite can vary. Some volunteers help with cooking and serving the food while other may be in charge of the walkie-talkies or checking in volunteers.

NOTE: Some volunteers may be contacted to help with pre-festival preparations. Please indicate if you are willing to do this.

Information Booth

The information booth is placed in a central location in the park and receives a variety of questions and concerns. Volunteers aid the public in finding event locations and to inform them about the festival. The information booth also records complaints and comments from various sources. Candidates with good communication skills, an ability to retain information and a friendly personality are asked to apply.

Mascots

Mascots will don the suit for twenty minute periods and roam around the park greeting visitors and posing for pictures. A mascot companion will follow the mascot to ensure its safety and will switch positions with the mascot from time to time.

Site Management

This position runs the day before, the day after and throughout the duration of the festival. It involves setting up, taking down and moving equipment. Volunteers also check out tables and chairs, arranging signs and setting the stage. Candidates who can lift heavy loads are strongly encouraged to volunteer. A willingness to follow directions is imperative.

A specific group of these volunteers will handle stage management. These individuals will work entirely with the main stage site and ensure that all equipment is set up and taken down with care.

Traffic Control

Volunteers assist with ensuring that only authorized pass-holders can park in lots. Some tasks include synchronizing the inflow and outflow of cars, communicating transportation and parking information to the general public and maintaining radio contact with directors to establish the most efficient use of parking lots. It is essential that these volunteers can remain clear-headed during stressful situations and are good at solving problems and overcoming challenges.

Floaters

Floaters fill in wherever extra help is needed. They also relieve volunteers during their breaks. These volunteers are able to experience many different aspects of the festival. The ability to be flexible is a must.

Others

Different aspects of the festival evolve and change every day! We will be adding positions as more come available and put them in the sign up section at the orientations.

What are volunteer orientations?

Volunteer orientations are where we can tell you about the festival, where you can get to know some of the people that you will be working with and most importantly, it’s where you sign up for your shifts. These sessions will also be used to distribute volunteer t-shirts. We will email volunteers with volunteer orientation dates once they become available. Please check your email frequently after signing up and make sure you check your junk folder as well. If you are unable to attend on any of the orientation dates, you may attend a make-up orientation. This date will be determined closer to the festival, please send an e-mail to the volunteer coordinator after you receive the e-mail listing orientation dates.

What happens after I submit my form?

Please add the Volunteer Coordinator's email address to your safe list. Keep an eye on your e-mail for updates before the orientation and leading up to the festival. Once your form is processed and we have received orientation dates, we will e-mail you with the dates along with any additional information that you will need to know.

What happens after the orientation?

We will post the volunteer schedule on an online database so you can check your volunteer times, sign up for additional shifts and check to make sure that your friends are signed up with you.

What if I still have questions about volunteering?
